BP Whiting Refinery
Fire Department

The City of Whiting is located along Lake Michigan just 22 miles southeast of Chicago in northern Lake County. Since 1889, it had been home to the fourth largest oil refinery in the United States. Whiting's BP Refinery employs a full-time fire chief, four full-time fire inspectors, 50 volunteer fire-fighters, and a 25-member auxiliary fire brigade, making available up to 75 firefighters for large incidents. Whiting Refinery FD responds to Fire, Rescue and Medical runs within the boundaries of the Refinery. On occasion, the Tower and other rigs have responded for Mutual Aid to the Cities of Whiting, Hammond and East Chicago. This unique department is one of the few industrial departments in the state.
