Valparaiso Fire Department

The City of Valparaiso is located 50 miles east of Chicago along
US-30 in central Porter County. Originally established in 1868, the department now includes 50 career firefighters who respond from two stations. VFD provides Fire, Rescue and ALS/BLS protection to more than 35,000 residents of Valparaiso and Center Township. Their response area includes nearly 30 square miles including the Valparaiso University Campus.

Station 1
Central Fire Station 1 - "The Pen" - 205 Indiana Avenue
Originally built in 1963, Station 1 is located on the eastside of downtown and is home to five apparatus. Stacked in tightly are
Engine 1, Rescue 1, Tanker 1, Reserve Engine 4 and Squad 2.
 
Engine 1 os
Engine 1 - 2001 KME Excel Pumper - 1250gpm/1000gal
E-1 protects the downtown and southside of Valpo. In addition to a full array of firefighting equipment, E-1 carries a full set
of extrication tools. Because the Engines have swapped stations and may have reserves running, VFD stopped placing number
designations on their engines.

When VFD began their full-time ambulance service in 2007, this apparatus was purchased from the South Hampton, NY.
 
Squad 2 - 2000 Ford F-350 - Walk-around Light Rescue
Former Squad 2 - 2000 Ford F-350 - Walk-around Light Rescue
Squad 2 was marked out of service since the arrival of the ambulances to VFD. It originally responded for medical assists
and could provide scene lighting and tactical support for nightime incidents.
 
Engine 1 - 1996 KME Excel Custom Pumper - 1250gpm/750gal
Reserve Engine 4 - 1996 KME Excel Custom Pumper - 1250gpm/1000gal
Engine 4 is the second reserve pumper and is now kept at Station 1.
 
1923 Seagrave
On April 5, 2002 "Betsey," a 1923 Seagrave Fire Engine was returned to the Valparaiso Fire Department, ending a forty one-year
extended leave. Her return on top of a trailer started in LaCrosse and ended when unloaded inside Valparaiso Fire Station 2
on Vale Park Avenue.
